“Mandela Day” è la traccia numero 8 di “Street Fighting Years”, ottavo album del gruppo “Simple Minds”. Uscito nel 1989, questa canzone è il primo singolo estratto dall’album. I Simple Minds sono un gruppo musicale scozzese, considerati uno dei più rappresentativi e influenti degli anni ‘80 e ‘90. In oltre trent’anni di carriera hanno venduto circa 40 milioni di album. Il gruppo attuale è formato da Jim Kerr(voce), Charlie Burchill(chitarra), Mel Gaynor(batteria), Andy Gillespie(tastiere) e Ged Grimes(basso). “Mandela Day” è anche il nome di un concerto che si è tenuto a Londra nello stadio di Wembley l’11 giugno 1988. Si è trattato di un evento culturale e sociale straordinario per festeggiare il 70° compleanno di Nelson Mandela. Il brano dei Simple Minds fu scritto appositamente per quel palco, è un pezzo simbolo dell’impegno sociale della musica inglese degli anni ‘80.
