“Radio Free Europe” è la traccia numero 1 di “Murmur”, album d’esordio del gruppo “R.E.M.”. Uscito nel 1983, questa canzone è il quarto singolo estratto dall’album. I R.E.M. sono stati un gruppo rock statunitense attivo dal 1980 al 2011. Formatosi ad Athens(Georgia) il 5 aprile 1980, la sigla R.E.M. è l’acronimo di “rapid eye movement”, la fase del sonno in cui si sogna. La band era composta da Michael Stipe(voce), Peter Buck(chitarra), Mike Mills(basso) e Bill Berry(batteria). L’album “Murmur” è considerato come una delle pietre miliari dell’alternative rock degli anni ‘80, nonché uno dei migliori album dei REM. Il titolo della canzone “Radio Free Europe” è ispirato al nome dell’omonima emittente radio. Il singolo fu pubblicato nell’estate 1981 e diventò un successo nelle “college radio” e raggiunse la prima posizione nella classifica di fine anno del settimanale di “New York Village Voice”, nella sezione “Best Independent Singles”.
